Malicious code that removes UX from sites?

[ad_1]

Hi, I recently had a client contact me letting me know their navigation bar and several UX/SEO related things were missing from the site. I checked and sure enough, it was as if I never added the widgets to the website to begin with. No login accounts were compromised.

What happened was:

Desktop Navigation menu – deleted from site
Headings that were optimized for SEO – deleted from site
Paragraphs that were optimized for SEO – deleted from site
Section where details for Gift Card and Pricing – deleted from site, practically the entire page.

No version history available, no version updates from my last one over a year ago.

I’ve already fixed the issue (thank goodness for submitting to Wayback Machine) but has anyone ever heard of any attacks on sites that would cause this sort of thing to happen even without giving access to the backend of the site? What type of login attempts should I be looking for in the login history? All I see is me, my client has no access.

We completed this website over a year ago and my client knows I actually did the work so it’s just a really weird thing to have experienced. We’re telling ourselves a local competitor is the culprit, haha.
