I'm a volunteer who is putting together a website for a small academic club of 150 members.
Over the past month, I've explored three membership plugins (MemberPress, Simple Membership, and Ultimate Member), and I don't know if my problem is a lack of understanding/experience or if no plugin will do what I need it to. I hope this community can help guide me because I'm seriously frustrated. There has to be a better way to figure this out!
- Other than a home page and perhaps a lengthier "about" page, all of the content needs to be restricted to members only.
- Membership is invitation-only, so I don't want any sort of open registration. Admins should register members, who then activate the registration and change their password.
- Our previous website used a universal login for all members, which I think is dicey – I want them to have individual usernames and passwords. I hope we can allow members to reset their own passwords without admin oversight.
- I suspect we need to hide the profile created by the plugin from other users. The website has two directories: one for current members and one for past members. Each directory entry links to a page devoted to a specific member, and that page contains internal links to specific projects and activities specific to that member and to specific meeting dates. I know this probably sounds exactly like a profile, but it must be something that admins edit, not the members themselves (other than perhaps the name, photo, and contact info). Am I barking up the wrong tree with this?
- We need a conditional menu that is visible to members only. I've already had to upload a new theme to allow this to happen – who knew the minimalist theme we initially selected couldn't accommodate conditional menus? I'm now using Astra.
- We need to have searchable content available to members only. I can't figure out how to put a search function just in the members-only area.
What is the easiest plugin to use that might accomplish all of this? Does it exist? Can anyone guide me?
