Misdirected request 50% of the time, for links on mobile. Do I really need a $120/yr wildcard SSL

So I have my main website in my primary domian, let’s call it school.com (HostGator). Then I have 8 websites in subdomains eg. level1.school.com, level2.school.com etc. as well as , teachers.school.com etc. Students go to the main website then click a link to the section that they paid for. While this works fine on the P.C., in moble (safari/chrome) it works about 50% of the time,

“Misdirected Request – The client needs a new connection for this request as the requested host name does not match the Server Name Indication (SNI) in use for this connection.”

If you keep trying, it will eventually work. If you directly type the subdomain address it works fine, and the QR codes I set up for each website work fine too. One of the subs works fine 100% of the time! ???

From what I’ve read online, its a common problem and has to do with that fact that I only have one SSL certificate for all of the sites.

Hostgator suggests that I need a ‘Positive Wildcard SSL’ package for $120 per year. Is this the best/only course of action. If my whole website didn’t work, I’d get it, but the fact that it’s half working makes feel like theres some glitch I could be fixing.
