Need Help: Changing WP Categories

[ad_1]

I’m horrible at the technical side of blogging, so hoping I can get some quick help here.

I want to add some categories, that SHOULD be simple enough.
But I also want to change some of the existing category names too.
More importantly, the ultimate goal is, I WANT TO REARRANGE WHAT CATEGORIES SOME POSTS ARE ASSIGNED TO.

I did that for a few posts last year and caused havoc. I had to do redirects for all of my posts that I changed. Which I am obviously hoping to avoid doing again.
My URL structure is [site.com/whateverinamethepost]) so no dates, no categories in them etc.

I use newspaper theme, and know how to change and reorganize within the them, and that doesn’t seem to cause any troubles.

MY QUESTION is. How can I add, change and reorganize categories and posts in WP without causing damage? Is it possible? Seo impact? Tips, tricks, advice are all greatly appreciated!!!

Ive been putting this off for fear of making a mistake, can’t find the answers googling, and hoping the experts here can help guide me.

  1. If you aren’t using categories in your URLs, then you won’t damage your site if you change a category slug.

However if you do allow access to the archive pages e.g. [site.com/cats]) (where cats is a category), and you change ‘cats’ to something else, then yes, you’ll get 404 for /cats, but Google will fix itself up overtime (or you can just setup redirects). Certainly nothing major to worry about.
