Need help with search box hiding the drop downs above it.

If you click on eg ‘About Us’ nav tab, the search box below is covering the drop down nav links.

I understand this needs to be installed:

.search-box {
z-index: 1;
}

.navigation-menu {
z-index: 2;
}

I have downloaded ‘Simple Custom CSS’ plugin, inserted the code into the plugin page then clicked on the ‘Update Custom CSS’ button.

Result: There is no change – have cleared the cache and the same – no change. Am I doing this the right way?
