This is the first time I have to create an online community with WordPress.
It is for a Cancer community centered on some encouraging results from a new candidate drug.
Can someone tell me which plugin would be better ? And what are some things people can do with this community ? Is it like a Facebook type community ?
Also I will need different categories of users from public visitors all the way to actual patients.

It depends on what features you want to have.
There are a lot of videos on YouTube about both BuddyPress and MemberPress. I think it would be much easier for you to understand what they are and how they work if you take a look at some of them.
