Hi all,
After doing a lot of reading and research, I thought I would post something in hopes of getting some opinions or even advice from you guys.
Briefly about me:
I have been working as a web developer and administrator in Typo3 for almost 4 years now. Hui was hard to switch from wordpress. Since a few weeks I got several requests if I still do wordpress websites. So I thought as a side job it would be great to start again to earn some extra money.
Now I have a hard time switching from Typo3 to WordPress. In Typo3 are many things core that need a plugin in WordPress e.g. acf pro or simply a form plugin.
So we started to evaluate old licenses.
Astra pro and live canvas builder. Unfortunately I had acf pro only in the agency and not bought privately. Therefore acf fell away for the time being. Since it is simply too expensive for 2-3 websites a year. Would fit yes from what you get paid but the license wants to be renewed every year 🤷
So then Gutenberg. The first 2 new pages with Astra Pro and spectra created. That went very quickly by hand and I was amazed at the hybrid setup (Classic theme + Block Builder).
Yes, if that goes so well then try FSE to be like many say “Future Proof”.
So I installed spectra one and spectra blocks on my private site. That went also very well. I am a fan of how fast such a creation can go from the hand.
After the handover talks with the customers came the disillusionment. My customers just want to create or replace content and move, delete and create sections.
They were both skeptical that they could break something on the layout….
They give it a try and if not I get to work again.
Now my new workflow. This one has not been tried practically yet.
In live canvas create all sections. Is a bootstrap builder that spits out fine bootstrap HTML. There is also a wordpress bootstrap theme for it.
Create sections with carbon fields as blocks in childtheme.
So the client can work with blocks but can not break anything.
Or even the classic acf route with Carbon fields or if the client wants the builder route he can get it with live canvas. Depends in budget.
Disadvantage of this method: what do I do when WordPress abolishes Classic Themes?
Somehow WordPress is very ambivalent at the moment. What is the to go workflow for small to medium websites at the moment?
Could also go the easy way and sell Typo3 to the customers. That’s just unfortunately for so small sites quite overkill🙈
Hui that was now very long. Sorry but that had to get out because it keeps me busy the last few weeks hard. Would be mega happy to get a few opinions or advice.
TL/DR: lean workflow to implement small to medium websites in wordpress. The customer should not have access to design but be able to create, delete and move sections.
