I am fairly new to this, but a client already owns a google domain and wants me to make a site. Whats the best method to start a wordpress? Is there anyway I can do it without having to pay upfront?

Well, you can start building the site locally with “Local by Flywheel”. When it’s ready you can show the client and proceed from there to discuss hosting (though perhaps you should start discussing hosting now).
The best method to make wordpress based website is using wordpress! Btw yes, upfront is a must or you’ll be fucked up doing thing for free and client will ignore you when you are begging to finish the payment. Its the basic rule in any business. 50% upfront + 30% in the middle + 20% when its done (before you give the credential).
EDIT: Add also extra charge for any late payment. Set extra 2-5% each time your client not pay in time. Its the way to make people pay their due.
There’s no FREE lunch in this World. Always take upfront at least 40/50% from client and rest can be defined via milestones.
