Hi everyone, I am trying to update the PHP and WP versions on an old website running WP 5.1.12 and PHP v. 5.6.17. My plan was to set up a staging site and test the PHP and WP updates incrementally there instead of on the live site. An issue I have run into is that all of the staging plugins I have tried running on the site have not been successful.
The most success I have had is downloading the site’s SQL DB via Updraft and downloading the site’s wp-content folder via SFTP. I then zipped these files and imported them to LOCAL and tested them with PHP v. 7.3.5 and WP v. 6.5.4. Everything seems to be intact, but I am a little nervous about making those jumps in PHP and WP version on the live site.
Does any one have any ideas about what might be the best way forward from here? Thanks so much!
Edit: I also forgot to mention another reason I am hesitant to move forward with this LOCAL install as my staging site is that I cannot access the WP Dashboard for it for some reason. I get an error telling me that the page cannot be found when I try to navigate there.
