I started a new job this week and my new employer got a new website last month and the company they hired used advanced custom fields to build the site. So we are pretty much limited to templates and those custom fields. There doesn’t seem to be any way to have columns, adding pictures with a text block or ways to add the particular block I need on the fly. The biggest thing is not being able to edit visually because you’re just adding content to fields and won’t know what it looks like until you preview.
Typically I wouldn’t see this as an issue except my new employer updates their website quite regularly and not small changes either, usually like completely new pages and things like that. Basically feels like I’m flying blind with very little control over the layout of the pages I need to build.
Why would a web company build a site like this?
it prevents laymen to screw up the site. and it centralizes the data, so there are no mistakes or inconsistencies on random, forgotten pages.
you can build your own page and use the acf data if you can’t edit the existing page, tho
As a matter of fact, ACF Pro can be a very powerful tool (and simple for editors) for building WP sites – especially, if you use ACF Flexible Content or other methods for templating. But such implementations have a learning curve.
Learning to use ACF Flexible Content with the Bricks builder has been a game changer for me.
If the site has many posts/custom posts, the point is to stay consistent in design and keep the complexity away from the post edit screen. ACF Flex Content can give the editors as much freedom in layouts and looks as the developer allows, and nothing more. This way the editors will not break stuff or create monster stuff.
