Occasional WP disappearance (Apache fine)

I have WordPress on a (linode) virtual server, running Ubuntu, installed via the XAMPP kit. I use it for a personal blog.

For the 3rd time in a few weeks, it’s died. The Apache server still seems to be running fine, static pages, no problem. But going to the blog in a browser, it redirects to wp-admin/install.php, which gives a 404.

Fortunately there’s a backup image on the server from yesterday, I just restored that, is straight back up again. [https://hyperdata.it/blog/])

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

It is a year or two since I did the initial WP install, good practice suggests I update. But this does seem quite extreme crashiness, if there’s a bug it’d have been fixed by then, surely..?
