Heya, I am just getting started with WP and stumbled upon the Oxygen Builder. I know some HTML and CSS but, well, not quite enough the make a decent looking website to my liking.
I am definitively a visual thinker and worker so designing a website e.g. in Figma or Affinity Designer is much more convenient for me. The Oxygen builder would be ideal for me but at the moment I just cannot afford it.
Is there a good working free alternative for Oxygen I can use? Thanks for your help 🙂

Elementor is good and has a free version. But what you pay for is the Theme Builder stuff that is fundamental to Oxygen.
Honestly, you might want to look into the Full Site Editing (FSE) tools native in WordPress now. The Gutenberg project (what became the Block Editor in WP) is really driving toward making Oxygen unnecessary. It’s not _quite_ there yet for a lot of people but YMMV.
I don’t think you’ll find a similar free alternative to Oxygen. There is the [Bricks Builder]) at $79 – soon to increase – for a single licence.
Note that the Oxygen builder is targeted towards developers, although that doesn’t mean you would not be able to work with it. Also, there has been some speculation regarding the developers’ commitment to Oxygen where the licences are sold as a one-off purchase, since they have also recently released a more accessible Breakdance builder on an annual subscription.
You might want to try the free Astra, Blocksy or Kadence themes. Using the block editor, all these will allow you to see what you are creating as you build the site in the back-end. They all have header and footer builders. There are also free blocks plugins like Kadence Blocks, Getwid, etc. that extend the functionality, and you can add selectors to any element and add custom CSS through the Customizer.
