Question on test links and live sites

[ad_1]

Hey, help would be really appreciated.

I’ve got a friend who’s got a website for a small business of his.
He wants me redesign and host his website, his current page is live under example dot com and around 10 pages.

I want to design and create him a new website under a subdomain/test link of mine and then when the time is right, re point his domain to the site I’ve built him.
Is that the correct way to do it?

Or do I need control of his domain, repoint to my hosting plan and then build the site under that?
But then of course there would be down time I assume?

Thanks for reading, I hope you can help

  1. Are you wanting it to be online so you can share your progress? Otherwise I always would recommend LocalWP to make the site locally. Then when times comes make the domain on your hosting and add the files and database. Repoint his domain name to your IP and job done.

If you want to make it on a subdomain online then that’s fine. When times comes just make his website name on your hosting, move all the files from the subdomain to the domain file folder and repoint his DNS.

Are you looking to control his hosting plan or get rid of his, because like someone else said you can make a staging site on his current hosting and go to town on that install, when times comes they normally have a transfer button to switch all the files etc.
