Hi @ajwebwork,
Thank you for your message.
Could you send me statistics how many images have been converted and how many images have been skipped?
Please also provide your website URL.
Best,
Mateusz
Hi Mateusz
thanks for getting back to me – this is the url:
I’m testing out the plugin to see if it helps speed up this site (as part of testing whether Dreamhost are a good option for the future).
The conversion is ongoing but so far it has successfully converted about 4500, and failed/skipped about 25,000. Total images about 85,000…
thanks
AJ
@ajwebwork Have you optimized your images before? If the image after converting to WebP is not smaller than the original image, it is skipped.
In this situation, I recommend you to try the AVIF format. For your website, AVIF images should weigh 48% less than WebP images. Then much less images will be skipped.
ah cool – how widely is the AVIF format supported?
@ajwebwork The AVIF format is supported by 85% of browsers. Let me also tell you how the plugin works.
When a browser tries to download an image file, the server checks if it supports the AVIF format (if enabled in the plugin settings). If so, the browser will receive the equivalent of the original image in the AVIF format. If it does not support AVIF, but supports the WebP format, the browser will receive the equivalent of the original image in WebP format. In case the browser does not support either WebP or AVIF, the original image is loaded. This means full support for all browsers.
Many thanks, very helpful
