Selling wordpress theme for the first time

[ad_1]

I m working on my first theme and I want to sell it for wordpress. The big problem is that if I offer live preview to the theme everyone with enough brain can just copy all html and css files and I ll get nothing for my job. I m thinking about making a video showing how the theme works on different screens this way I will prevent people from stealing my code free

I don’t mind if few people get it free but if everyone does it’s pointless to spend so many hours writing code

Where do you sell wordpress themes and is it my job to write the php code for the search?

  1. I’m not an expert myself, but reading your post gives me a hint that you still have much to learn to start selling a theme.

First, if you are not doing any php you are not doing a theme, it’s more of a demo site or something along those lines, every theme offers it’s own demo sites nowadays for free or for an extra payment. Your first step would be knowing what are you actually doing, a theme, a demo site, a website.

Then, something you have to realize is that copying the html and css is something everyone can do, but the functionality is another thing. The connection to the database, tha Js code, the php, custom fields, etc, are what’s important.

There are hundreds of websites that offer free resources, demo sites, previews, free themes, etc, copying should not be a priority right now.

    Hope it helps!

  2. I see this as a non-issue honestly. Yes, others can copy your html / css / js as with any other website and theme demo, but a wordpress theme is in general a bit more than those parts. Also, who and for what purpose should copy your html/css/js without the theme php files? Anyone able to reconstruct a theme from those is likely able to build his own stuff without doing a scrape.

  3. To be honest it sounds like you’re not ready to be selling a theme if you have to ask whether you need to write the code for the search functionality.

Read through the documentation provided for creating themes [https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/]).

Your theme, once installed by a user, should function without any issues and offer all the expected features of a theme. E.g. ability to set social media links, which get shown in the header/footer, ability to customize other things like the colour scheme / logo etc…

Based on one of your other comments it doesn’t sound like you know much PHP either, which you’ll definitely need to have a good understanding of if you’re going to be selling a theme (people will expect there to be some level of support available if any issues arise with your theme).

You should spend time looking at other themes, taking them apart, understand how the various parts of a WordPress theme function.
