I currently have all my photos archived [here])
This has been made using Koken framework, which was perfect but unfortunately discontinued.
I can’t modify this anymore, homepage is buggy, I have to rebuild it.
I am then looking for a very simple theme to replicate this : left menu with subcategories, masonry gallery on right, lightbox (homepage slider as a bonus).
But after lots of browsing, I can only find expensive themes with lots of bells and whistles, or ugly simple ones with bad ux.
Would someone know a cheap simple theme enabling me to get the same result ?

If you expect a theme to achieve all you need above, then it’s going to be difficult… as some may not cover enough, while others may come with some junk.
So, maybe better start with a minimalistic theme, and build those features with codes, page builders, or plugins. At least, this way, you have a clean foundation to build from and reduce unwanted stuff.
Hello is probably the most minimalistic theme. If you want a bit more, then may have a look at OceanWP or GeneratePress.
This sounds very basic. In this case i would go with “hello Elementor” and just built it myself with Elementor than. Install header and footer builder and than just design your portfolio page as you want. No unnessary bloat.
