Templates and pages

[ad_1]

Hi folks, I built my front page on the front page template.

Firstly, is that wrong? Do you need to build a page before you use a template? Or can you build the entire ‘page’ you want including it’s content on a template and then just add that template to the actual page you want it to appear on? Is that ok?

But, the main issue I’m having is that when trying to link the front page to the ‘home’ section of my header which is on every page on my site, I can’t find the ‘front page’ template. Only some of the templates are visible. The front page template is built with the Sonora theme.
I don’t understand why I can’t find it when I’ve been able to find other templates I’ve created to add to other pages I’ve created. But for some reason the front page template is nowhere to be found in the ‘page’ section of the page editing window.

Hope this is clear, only just starting out, apologies if I haven’t used the right terminology.

  1. WordPress by default has two post types: Posts and Pages.

Posts are meant to be the articles on blogs, and pages are for the rest.

Every page or post uses a template.

A template defines the structure of the page. You create there the things that will be common to all the pages or posts using that template (a header, a footer, a sidebar…) and indicate where on the page the “content” goes.

That “content” refers to what you put inside your actual page or post. When you edit a post or a page, THAT is what’s refered as “content” on a template.

So yes, creating the entire page on a template is usually wrong. Although in the case of the home page, you usually will only have one page using that template.

When you are editing a page, on the right sidebar you select the template that you want this page to use, and as a result, it will determine how it will look on your website.

Every page and post your website will have, you have to create them on the section for Pages or Posts of your dashboard.

On your header menu, you can only link the Pages or Posts you have created, it makes no sense to link to a template (the structure of a page).

    Hope it makes sense.
