I’m attempting to upload a theme that I purchased from a website, it states that it is a responsive theme (html5), which I can basically upload. However, whenever I upload that theme or other themes to WordPress, I receive an error stating that the file does not contain “style.css.”

What exactly are you uploading? And where?
You need to upload the theme zip file. Sometimes the theme zip is in another zip file.
