I am very new to WordPress. I worked out that I needed a theme, so I bought one at a place called Theme Forest for about USD40, but it looked like I couldn’t do much with it. I would like my site to look cool, with pictures and menus and columns etc.
So I asked ChatGPT what to do next, and it suggested looking at WordPress Frameworks such as the CherryFramework. With some regret at the wasted money, I deleted my theme and installed CherryFramework instead, but then I noticed that it hadn’t been updated for many years and did not look like it had much support.
So after a little more research I found out about Genesis Framework. I deleted CherryFrameork and installed Genesis Framework together with its child theme. Things were looking pretty good, until I found out that the Genesis Framework basic child theme itself did not seem to have that much built in, so a lot of extra work would be required. Accordingly I went to buy a more advanced theme compatible with the Genesis Framework , it looks like I have to buy a very expensive subscription to StudioPress before I can do this.
So after two days of uploading and deleting themes and frameworks I then found out about GeneratePress – which looks great, and just what I need – plus there seems to be a relatively reasonable subscription for extra features. So here I am about to delete Genesis Framework and install GeneratePress instead.
However having been through the process of uploading and deleting a WordPress theme three times I’ve become totally paranoid that I’ve missed something or, alternatively, that I’m completely on the wrong track.
Basically I would like to make a few personal websites covering different issues I’m interested in directed at different audiences (areas are Japanese business and tax, Haiku, Ukiyoe – so maybe three websites put quite different. I know more or less enough to host them on google cloud platform, which I would like to do for the flexibility and control it gives me over starting or stopping, monitoring costs and backup etc.
Am I on the right track now with GeneratePress? Or is there something else out there that I’ve missed?

GeneratePress is a good and up to date theme that uses the new block editor. I’m using it as well for smaller sites which don’t require much customization. Combine it with GenerateBlocks (Pro) and you have a very decent foundation to build some websites.
