Hi all,
I’m currently working on setting up a blog for myself with a few pages. Since I’m not a developer and didn’t have a budget to spend on a dev, I ended up purchasing (rather hastily and without research) a budget-friendly web template from envato elements.
But, when I tried to upload the theme (in .zip format) into WordPress, it said that ‘style.css’ was missing. I haven’t meddled with the placement of files and am sure it’s in the folders in the .zip file.
Do you think I’m receiving this error because I’ve downloaded a file not suited to WordPress or is it because of some error from the template itself?
Thank you in advance for your advice and assistance.
On a side note: I would defo have hired a dev if I had the dough. This just turned out to be a hasty affair.
Best Regards,
WC

Only WordPress themes will work with WordPress. Try to get your money back.
You’re getting this because style.css is missing. As in it’s not there. WordPress expects this file to load styles. Your attempt to save money requires you to rebuild parts if not all of your theme in WordPress format.
This is not going to just integrate with the cms even if you add the file. There are cms variables that are required for a database connection along with displaying the content.
My recommendation would be to up the budget and hire someone to do it right. Clients know when a site is cheaply made, and if you cut corners there where else in quality are you cutting corners.
Check inside the zip. A lot of themes have multiple things inside the “main” folder. There might be a a folder which is called “Theme” or what ever. The Folder you need to upload is the one which contains the style.css
You can only extend WordPress with WordPress themes and WordPress plugins. Anything else, as you say “web templates”, will fail. You can’t install things that were not meant for WordPress.
If you’re trying to save money, have a look at highly-regarded freemium themes, e.g. Kadence, GeneratePress or Blocksy. Their free versions are certainly usable, though the premium versions can have nice features.
But maybe it is a nested zip that you got. You can unzip it, and see if there is another one inside. Or post a link to the template/theme.
