After checking several client websites this morning, it appears that access to the WordPress repository has been restored for WP Engine customers. It's unclear if Matt has relented and restored access or if WP Engine found a work around.

I just checked a couple sites and was able to update themes and plugins also.
We’re still seeing the issue on our client’s wpengine websites.
Edit: This seems to only affect our sites running under the xxxx.wpenginepowered.com domain, live domains on the service seem to be able to access the repository without issue.
Hopefully it stays that way
