Using Templates on a Portfolio – Legality.

[ad_1]

I’ll make this quick as I’m sure the newbie posts can get a bit boring here.

Recently began learning WordPress and have just been messing around on my localhost in an attempt to understand the basics, and I wanted to start developing a few sites to test my skills.

I didn’t want to start with developing a custom theme just yet as I was still just barely understand things, so I used a starter template plugin to get a generic website ready to test on. I did this with an e-commerce store, a restaurant’s page, and a generic portfolio site. I was hoping to combine these into a beginner web dev portfolio. This would be what I would give to my first few clients if I were to get far enough. I would change the generic portfolio site to be more centered towards web development of course, then the other two sites would be housed on it in a ‘projects’ section.

As I work on more complex projects, I would switch these out over time, but I’m just worried about the legal implications of using templates sites in a portfolio. None of the original imagery or media remains, I changed it all, but of course its the same style.

I would assume a disclaimer such as ‘a template was used to design this website’ should be displayed, but where? Is there a specific area it should be put to avoid legal ramifications?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  1. There’s no legality issues with using a template. There is, however, ethical issues with billing yourself as a developer if you can’t…you know…develop anything.

  2. Dive in! The water is nice. The only way to get GUD is to do the dev. You’ll break shit. You’ll come here knowing what to ask because you’ve done your own research, when you need help and we’ll help you.
