VENT: I feel “scammed” by how .com and .org work.

Hi!
I’m getting married in a couple of months and me and my SO thought it would be cool to create a website for our wedding. After reading a bit online I went with WordPress as it seemed simple yet powerful. I logged in wordpress.com, created an account, bought a domain and got my hands to work.
At first I thought it was intuitive and since I already had an idea of what I would want I went with a blank page and tried building it up. After a few hours I had to give up because I could not, for the life of me, get things where I wanted them to be.
I decided to try a pre made theme. Theme chosen only to realise that I would need a “premium plan” that would cost around 300 € annually.
Ok, let’s download one online and install it. Nope, premium feature.
My SO tries to help me and watches an hour long video about wordpress and how to make your own website. She was pretty excited because she felt we would only need to follow the video. We get home, open WP and search for the theme “Astra”. Nope, comunity theme, need to pay 300 as well.
Ok, let’s look for the “elementor” plugin. Nope, 300 as well.
After all of this, and feeling strange that the video never mentioned these prices, I find out about wordpress.org.. He was using wordpress.org.
In .org, you can use everything you want. No “premium plans”.
I feel a bit scammed out of my money, time and will to make a website. And the cherry on top is that I don’t even know if I can use the domain that I bought on .com with .org.
Tomorrow I’m gonna try to install wordpress.org and make this work but my hopes are in an all time low. Maybe it’s because it’s not our area (we are both doctors) but damn, what an heart wrenching experience.

TLDR: Started making an website on wordpress.com only to realise that almost all the features are on a 300€ anual plan. WordPress.org lets you use those features for free.

  1. .org is the solution.. you are trapped in a system you don’t understand. Not to blame, webdev is a full career. you made a first step and it was the wrong one, it happens. Recreate what you have done with .org. You have already learned a bit and second time around things.
I mean rant all you want, it is healthy, but if you need a solution, you already have one.
