Not my blog but for context:
[https://amazinglyfewdiscothequesprovidejukeboxes.wordpress.com/]) Theme: Apostrophe 2.
Overall I pretty much like the interface of this theme. I’m not the biggest fan of the unnecessary grey line under the header section and the fact that the header image crops on tablets/phones instead of just resizing a bit. (I also don’t really love the look of the sidebar but that feels pretty customizable by… just not putting anything in it?)
Oddly after loading the theme in LocalWP I have less customization options when it comes to the colors of the theme than I got in the menu on [Wordpress.com](https://Wordpress.com)?? And when it comes to adding custom css (instead of editing an existing sheet, though it’s been 10 years since I’ve done anything like that either) I have no clue whatsoever where to start either. I also looked into things like Elementor and Beaver but they puzzled me more than anything.
All in all it feels like I should watch some tutorials/read some instructions but I’m pretty burned out so my ability to focus/take in information is not in the best shape. I am willing to do the work, just would like to know that the work I’m doing will actually help me get closer to what I want to accomplish instead of just adding more info and question marks in my head. (The last days I’ve pretty much spent reading random articles and reddits on WordPress but thusfar I mainly feel I get more and more exhausted without getting any closer to having the faintest clue where to start. Also everything I read adds more possible ways (from child themes to starting from scratch to.. possibly looking for a completely different theme altogether) and well.. it’s just A LOT. Maybe this is just above my league but I feel like I’m somehow overcomplicating something that shouldn’t be this hard if I just knew which steps to take?
Wanting to make tiny changes to an existing theme, what would be a good starting point?

Create a child theme and make your changes on the child theme.
They gray line should be changeable in CSS. Not using the sidebar is a possible solution. As for the cropping of the banner that probably needs to be addressed in the theme files. Your best bet would probably be a child theme. I can’t be your dev (for free) and can’t even gurentee good work. However I might be able to offer you a fast bandaid. A quick thrown together child theme addressing these with some comments in the code. Should atlesst give you a more stuctured start for your learnings.
I’m on my phone. Give this an up vote and a comment so I can find it easier later. Hopfully I can give you some help when I’m back at my computer
