  1. I have used both these options in the past 20 years for my websites. I started with HTML back then anyways:

    1. beta.yourdomain(dot)com
    2. local install

  2. Safe and secure can mean different things depending on who the audience is. What does safe and secure mean to you?

Do you mean updating content, plugins, WordPress, servers or all of the above? Assuming it’s plugins and WordPress, you can do this in a variety of ways.

    * Run a local instance on your machine e.g. PC, laptop. The downside is that it’s unlikely to mirror the server the production site may be running on.
    * Set up a staging or pre-production environment e.g. [staging.domain.com]) that’s running with the same configuration and infrastructure as the production site. You’ll also want to look into locking down the site so that it isn’t publicly access e.g. basic authentication. You may hit limitations with the number of sites you can run depending on where and how you host the sties.
    * Spin up a sandbox with a service like [https://instawp.com/])
