I am using ‘[twentytwelve]’ and while it still works for me – responsive, I like the child theme I created – I suspect I should replace it with a newer theme.
Is this necessary? What are the biggest benefits of replacing with a newer theme?
A bit of context:
\- I don’t want a significant change to the look of the site.
\- I would much prefer a free theme

In your context, ~~updating~~ changing the look of your website.
Updating your WordPress theme to a more recent version can bring a number of advantages, including:
**Improved security**: Newer themes are often released with security updates and improvements to help protect your website from potential vulnerabilities
**Improved performance**: Newer themes are usually optimized for better performance, which can help improve the loading speed and overall user experience of your website.
**New features and functionality**: Newer themes may include new features and functionality that can enhance the look and feel of your website or make it easier to manage.
**Better compatibility with plugins and WordPress updates**: Keeping your theme up to date can help ensure that it is compatible with the latest versions of WordPress and any plugins you are using.
It’s important to note that updating your theme can also come with some risks, such as the potential for conflicts with customizations or plugins that you have installed. It’s always a good idea to test your website thoroughly after updating your theme to make sure everything is working as expected. Overall, the decision to update your WordPress theme should be based on a careful evaluation of the benefits and risks, as well as your specific needs and goals for your website. If you do decide to update your theme, be sure to back up your website first and consider working with a developer or using a staging environment to minimize the risk of any issues.
If this theme does not present errors on your website, you can continue to use it.
It is an official WordPress theme and is available in the official theme directory, that means it stills receiving security updates (Last updated: December 19, 2022).
It may not have support for the new WP features, but it all depends on whether you need them or not.
