What’s the CLI syntax for updating a plugin from a file?

I’m trying to figure out how to update some homegrown plugins on command. I can get the file onto the server, but I can’t trigger an update.

I was trying “wp plugin update –path=path-to-file.zip”

What’s the right syntax?
Is there a better approach?
