Why can’t I post a URL to my WordPress blog?

Of course, I can post the URL as just text, but I’m wondering why I can’t post a URL and get a preview and a clickable link (such as on Facebook or Twitter). My blog is free, and I’ve had it since 2003, so I don’t know if it’s an age problem, a theme problem, or an upgrade issue. Any tips welcome!
