WordPress 6.5 Custom Page Templates

Our Project’s custom theme (classic) has its custom page templates written in PHP. With the new Minor release “Regina”. The block editor summary does not show the Template files on `/templates directory` on the Template Dropdown and we had to use the [Quick Edit workaround](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/page-templates-no-longer-appears-after-wordpress-6-5-block-editor/) in order to select the template for the page.

We tried following [https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/global-settings-and-styles/custom-templates/](https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/global-settings-and-styles/custom-templates/) and we are unsure why it would only support html template and not php files.

We updated from wp 6.4 to 6.5 and are using the Quick Edit workaround temporarily to accommodate the new minor release.
I find it confusing as their changelog and release notes does not mention changes in Custom Template Interactions. Am I missing anything?
