Are you using some sort of ad-blocker or have JS/CSS disabled? Your browser isn’t loading them for the backend.
We’ve been experiencing the same issue! Glad to see it’s not just us as it’s been driving us crazy.
From our experience the wp-admin area occasionally 404s (usually when saving a post) and from a quick review of logs we’ve noticed a process causing unusually high CPU loads which appears to cause the 404 and can sometimes tank a site if the hosting isn’t up to scratch.
I haven’t had chance to dive deeper into the issue yet but definitely something we’ve ran into in a number of occasions with the latest version.
For context I work for a company that builds WP sites for enterprises so the theme is bespoke and plugins are limited (Yoast, ACF, etc). We also utilise object caching with redis.
I’ve had this happen when using a poorly coded theme that referenced JS/CSS files incorrectly. To get around it, I’d check developer tools and see if they’re coming up with a 404, locate where they actually are, and use a redirection plugin to redirect calls from the broken link to the correct location.
It’s not a great way to deal with it long term, but it should let you at least make the dashboard more usable in the near term.
When I had to do it that let me work on the site for a few weeks while I got a corrected version of the theme from the designer.
CSS isn’t loading. Typically this happens because of a misconfigured SSL certificate or domain name (i.e. www when the site is setup for non-www)
