I have issues when I want to comment on a post. I also tried to comment when I wasn’t logged in and it didn’t work.
First and most likely: I comment, click on the Post Comment button, the pop up that says “subscribe” pops up (I’m already subscribed). Then the lage reloads but my comment is nowhere to be found. The comment count on the post is still as though I haven’t commented at all. But if I try to comment the exact same thing again, a window opens, telling me my comment is a duplicate comment.

On what site, exactly? Every site is its own island. WordPress is just free software, it’s not a unified thing, and every site is a different entity than every other.
Sounds like they have comment approval on. Reach out to your professor and check.
Looks like an admin has to accept the comment. Just log into the backend and open the *Comments* page from the sidebar and accept the comment.
