Kavana is a block theme, which is a newer type of theme. Many of the tutorials and videos you have read may have been outdated.
For block themes like Kavana, you can edit their design from the Site Editor. Here is the documentation for customizing things from the Site Editor:
Note that block themes do not support widgets, at least not in the classic sense. But you can add any blocks to any part of the theme from the Site Editor (blocks replace the older widgets system).
OH! Well now it makes sense. I obviously didn’t understand what “block theme” meant when I picked it. I am new to WordPress and blogging. But now I know.
