Comment Moderation & Blacklist: Restrict to Exact Matches (Not Inside Words)

[ad_1]

Hi folks! I’m a longtime WP user and only recently began using custom comment moderation rules on a few of my sites.

Per WordPress’s official documentation (and within the Settings —> Discussion menu itself), the WP built-in moderation/disallow rules will, apparently, *always* include partial matches (i.e., will always match inside words). So, for instance, “ass” would also match to “assistant.”

Can I natively avoid that and force/restrict matches to the exact string of letters (that is, exactly the word) or the exact phrases (some items on my lists are groups of words)?

I’m also seeking clarification on the *syntax* for the comment moderation and disallowed comment key tools. For instance, some published blacklists have characters with varying prefixes such as underscore (_), hyphen (-), or double hyphen (–). It’d be great to understand what these modifiers do so that I could use them to my advantage in the WP-native blocking/moderation tools.

Thanks!!
