Do I choose a theme with a lot of unwanted features or choose a theme with only my list of current wants?

I’m trying my best to avoid Rule 7 here.

I am currently searching for a WordPress theme to suite my current needs but most themes have so many more features than I would ever want to use. I’m relatively new to WP, so I am unsure about the issues arising from simply not using most theme features.

Will my WP theme be slower because it still has the features embedded into the code without using them? I may want to use a feature in the very distant future, so a heavily loaded theme could be useful for future proofing.

Are there any major negatives to picking a very basic theme like a special feature that isn’t (edit) tucked into the background?

  1. After many years of WordPress development my suggestion is to choose a theme based on visual layout only. Basically the theme should control the header, footer and menu appearance only. If you use lots of embedded features then changing your theme later can be a nightmare. So your plan is a good one.

In my experience the unused features do not matter. If you use any decent cache plugin then unused features should not make any large difference in speed.
