Got an e-mail from BlueHost saying my Free SSL of 1 year is expiring and they will automatically replace it with an $ 85 certificate. How do I keep the free one?

I started WordPress last year and got a free SSL certificate. Now I get an email from BlueHost saying the free SSL is expiring and they will automatically replace it with one of $ 85 per year if I do not opt out by phone on time.

If I call them to opt out, what happens? How do I keep the free version of the SSL certificate?

  1. See if there is an option to use Let’s Encrypt certificates. That should be free. Alternatively, you can enable Cloudflare for free SSL certificates (including their long term origin certificates on your server).

Most importantly, you should look to switch to a better host.

  2. If you give up on your SSL certificate, your site will stop using the secured HTTPS protocol (`https://example.com`) and switch to the old HTTP one `(http://example.com`). This is bad on different levels, from security to SEO.

From what I understand, Bluehosts offers free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates [https://www.bluehost.com/help/article/ssl-certificates](https://www.bluehost.com/help/article/ssl-certificates) Ask them to replace the paid one with the free one.

But, as others mentioned here, switching hosts would be a good idea.
