I have been offered my first freelance gig, but I think I’m in over my head.

Hi everyone,

I’m a recent grad who’s been approached by someone to develop a website for their business. The client wants the website built on WordPress and it will have some unique functionality. Bear in mind, I know only a little about WordPress development and no PHP!

Here’s what the client needs:

* A search box on the homepage where users can search for a domain name with extensions like .com, .net, etc.
* This will connect to an external API.
* If the domain is taken, the user will be advised that it is unavailable and to try again.
* If the domain is available, the user will be told it is available and have the option to request to purchase it.
* This would require the creation of a custom product and payment capture.
* The actual domain registration would be handled manually by the client.

It’s a shame to turn down paid work, especially when it could be a great learning experience. However, given the bespoke functionality and the fact that the project will involve payments, it seems like a risk to take this project on when I have relatively little experience in this area. My gut is telling me to turn it down and focus on educating myself.

What do you guys think? Should I take the project and learn as I go, or should I turn it down and build up my skills first?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

  1. Personally, I would turn it down.

If you don’t have sufficient knowledge and experience to do what the client needs, then you need to be honest with yourself and with the client.

If the client expects you to know what you’re doing, and you don’t, then you have mislead the client.
