Looking for some advice on taking over from another dev

[ad_1]

I’m fairly new to WordPress, having only built one site for my own business. I’ve been asked by a family member to take over the development of their professional website from their current dev who is retiring. There are a couple of issues that I’m struggling to get my head around.

1. I would want to host a WordPress site for them, but the current website is not a WordPress site. It is an HTML site being hosted on [ionos.co.uk](http://ionos.co.uk/). I want to build a new site in WordPress and get rid of this old html site, but I’m not sure what would be the best way to go about it.
2. My relative has two professional email accounts which are hosted separately with [ionos.co.uk](http://ionos.co.uk/). Unless I were to simply take over the ionos account (which I don’t think I can do since the current dev has many sites they are managing), I’m not sure how to transfer the email accounts to a new service.

These might be very easy questions, but as I said, I’m kinda new to all this. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

  1. The email can likely stay where it is, as that company is a retailer not a wholesaler so the current dev shouldn’t be involved.

This is of course assuming they are using a dedicated email solution and not cPanel email.

If you want to rebuild the current website in WordPress just get a new hosting account. Build the site on a subdomain using a temporary domain, once approved migrate the site to the root folder and fix up the A records to point to the correct sever.

    Cancel the old hosting account.

  2. Its pretty easy, get a hosting plan with new provider and if you wish you can transfer the present html file to new provider and then develop the new wordpress site on subdomain or folder so that your website with new provider does not shows down.

Secondly about Email we have transferred many such email account for customers who wish to migrate to us, our support team normally does it using Imap transfer method .. so you need to check with new provider to if you need help you can DM me we can help you get this done.

  3. No one has mentioned this but make sure you take care of the seo when changing the site, place proper url redirects if the urls are going to change.

Not doing this could set you back ages.

Also can you not just transfer the domain away on a new hosting account which then you could re-create the email addresses

  4. IMO I suggest you hire a professional developer to set all of this up (or ask the retiring developer to do so). There are so many ways this could break, and this is your relative’s livelihood.
