We have a client who runs a Football Field and we need a way of not only displaying the status of the field (Open/Closed – Due to rain or events ect) but also an easy, quick way for them to update its status. Are there any plugins available that would cater for this?

Use a role editor, give them access to a single custom post type, link to the post in the site menu, or display the title / excerpt of that single post on the homepage.
Let them worry about what to write, it sounds like there are a lot of dynamic reasons to close or open the pitch.
Post title: Site Status, then just use plain text to put the status in. Pull the excerpt and title to the front page, done. (of course you have to make it pretty)
