so i’m creating a website a purchased a domain name from wordpress itself.I’m currently using the free version but just purchased the domain name on its own.however i cant seem to apply it to the address and its not giving me the option to change it . any help is need

You’re talking about WordPress.com, not WordPress. For help with WordPress.com, you need to reach out to their support – they are a proprietary hosting company and do things differently to WordPress. https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/
WordPress is free software. It doesn’t sell domains.
WordPress.com is a website on the internet run by a company called Automattic and yes one of the things they do is sell domains.
If you bought a domain from them, then you should be talking to them about problems with it. They have good support, and only they can actually help you.
