I need to track outbound clicks from our website. Yes, they are links that are longer than 100 characters. No, I cannot change how long they are.
I had been using Jetpack. But, we are a small non-profit, and, so, their massive bill per year is not going to happen. (We take donations for our Friends group. Oh hearts stars and horseshoes how could we…. /s). And so, no more Jetpack ’cause we’re “Commercial”
I tried many different things on GA4/GTM. They didn’t work either. Even after jumping through all the GTM stuff, everything was still cut, it made no difference.
Honestly, the one thing that boggles my mind is that I even went about putting an element/link id on many of the links, and, that’s supposed to show up in the Exploration that I made, and, yet, it doesn’t. I assume that either WordPress or GA is stripping it out at some point. (Or has Link ID been deprecated or gotten rid of on GA and it being there is just teasing me?)
I do have a question. My question is, is there any WordPress Stats plugin/program out there that will work for me? On the whole, I do like GA, it does a lot. But, I need something so that I can get these whole links tracked and not just have them cut off before they’re useful (I did touch base with Independent Analytics, and, it looks like that is coming, but not here yet. Also, two thumbs up for them responding to my random question from a random non-user).
If I can’t find something that works and doesn’t break the bank then I don’t know… I’ll have ato make them all shortlinks/tiny links or something like that. I do not want to do that, especially when I know that Jetpack can see more than 100 characters and report those clicks, but, apparently the ‘great and mighty’ GA can’t…. 😐

Requires a bit of config/setup for self hosted version but I’ve heard good things about matomo. Haven’t had a chance to investigate myself though.
