Why can’t assign static homepage when using FSE Block theme

I’ve switched over to full site editing (FSE) with Blocks. Apparently you can’t just assign a page as your homepage now. The homepage is created in the theme editor. I can see some obvious disadvantages of this. What are the advantages?
