wordpress.com + 8 yrs

So the last time I had used WP was somewhere around 2014. I had been a regular with them for years up til that point and came along with any upgrades. So I made the mistake of coming back in 2023 thinking most things will be the same. . . Unfortunately I didn’t realize until after I had paid an annual subscription (personal tier) and hooked up my domain with them that you can no longer take a theme as a starting point and edit elements from there. You’re stuck with the fonts and colour palette and when it may look like a black background it’s slightly off when you look on mobile.

I tried to make an image on XD and upload it as a photo but it doesn’t allow it to match no matter the theme. I inverted it bc I couldn’t find a theme with a true black background but when I changed tge theme to a white BG and the photo from XD with white BG, the photo shoes up Grey on desktop and mobile? Is this so you can’t work around?

I refuse to pay for the business tier even though I was told incorrectly that I could design in XD and use the plug-in to convert it to WP. . . No plug-ins without the biz tier.

I also am working on embedding a PayPal button in the payments page so I dont have to pay WP 8% and Stripe 3%+.30 cents of every transaction. Not sure if this is going to work as the articles about it are all 2 years old or more.

Basically I need to figure out how to move everything to wordpress.org and find out if:

– it supports plug-ins like Yotako to design in XD/Figma or at least give me freedom to change the styling?
– will allow me to take card payments without taking a huge chunk?
– the annual plan I paid is just gone or of that can be credited to cover hosting fees?
– will allow me to have a calendar/appts page for clients to make appts?
– will allow me to have a page where the client can download and upload files such as signed contracts

I can’t code much other than html and css and that I’m a little rusty on but could pick it up quickly. I don’t have a lot of money but if someone has the knowledge and the time to help I would be happy to work something out to get my website up and running. I just can’t believe how sad and amateurish this wordpress site looks and would rather do the work than pay WP almost 300 a year for their Biz tier just to get a functional site. Not tension I’m paying the domains amd will have to pay Google biz a chunk.

Thank you for reading and any tips or resources you share!
