Worry about the future of WP

[ad_1]

Yesterday I found out my favorite security plugin (wp cerber) was removed from the official WP repo.

This was like a tipping point for me. WP is in danger now in my mind.

What makes WP beautiful is its open-source corky nature. The idea that people who use it are willing to sacrifice a little bit of stability in exchange for getting an extremely large plugin repo. Letting people with not much experience publish plugins is a beautiful thing. It allows innovation and interest from individual developers and thus fosters innovation and products that do not demand large profit margins to support a corporate entity.

WordPress has admitted to this. They admit they are raising the plugin standards; this was a big deal months ago when they removed some other big-name plugin simply because it allowed you to include your own CSS right in the plugin files instead of using the customizer (the customizer has been removed entirely in the 2022 theme)

They did it again, WP cerber is a large company with many devs. They cannot even adhere to the standards. I am sure they tried to, in order to sell their product!

I know they can just self publish and then you can side load it. That is a horrible excuse, no one is going to take time to develop a plugin that will live on some other website and rely on being found without the official plugin repo. Maybe the big guys will but the little devs will just say forget it.

This is all just an indicator of the direction of wordpress. They are attempting to make it so people with no idea what they are doing can use it. Like a wix or squarespace.

Just look at how much they are dumping into the block editor.

We know how this goes. They are trying to lock it down so you cannot make mistakes. This will result in less room for people who know what they are doing to use it. Or some hybrid monster that is not good at either task.

Idk, it all just makes me feel WPs days are numbered. If their goal is to make it idiot proof, it will lose what makes it special. All good things do not try to be idiot proof because that is simply impossible.

I hope this is not the case, and that Automatic’s now google owners will let it remain a wonderful open-source wacky fun CMS instead of a dumbed down, locked down, another corporate owned CMS in the sea of other lemons that are only good for people with no idea what they are doing to start with, eventually fail at using and then have to hire a dev anyway.

  1. Why can’t we have it both ways? User friendly front-end with the ability to override anything and everything in code?
